Bakosne Borocz, Maria; Fogarassy, Csaba.
------------------------------ In our study we reviewed the conditions of extensive agricultural farming and its benefits based on environmental criteria. Furthermore we examined its external effects, which may affect the agriculture and the meat cattle breeding. Beef fattening, when done intensively, can cause huge environmental problems which may cause negative...

Banterle, Alessandro; Carraresi, Laura; Stranieri, Stefanella.
The purpose of this paper is to assess the marketing management capabilities of SMEs producing traditional food products in EU throughout the development of a benchmarking tool. SMEs represent the greater part of European food firms and they find it very difficult to adapt to market changes, and to compete with big enterprises. In this context, marketing management plays a key role in good SMEs performances in the market. The benchmarking tool, utilised to assess marketing capabilities, is aimed at improving critical points in the marketing area of traditional food firms by following the example of the best ones. This method is developed in the innovative form of an interactive questionnaire published on the Web. At the moment the sample is composed by 60...

We performed a quantitative comparison of brittle thrust wedge experiments to evaluate the variability among analogue models and to appraise the reproducibility and limits of model interpretation. Fifteen analogue modeling laboratories participated in this benchmark initiative. Each laboratory received a shipment of the same type of quartz and corundum sand and all laboratories adhered to a stringent model building protocol and used the same type of foil to cover base and sidewalls of the sandbox. Sieve structure, sifting height, filling rate, and details on off-scraping of excess sand followed prescribed procedures. Our analogue benchmark shows that even for simple plane-strain experiments with prescribed stringent model construction techniques,...

Benchmarking International Food Safety Performance in the Fresh Produce Sector AgEcon
Garcia Martinez, Marian; Poole, Nigel D.; Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel; Yalcin, Ismet; Koc, A. Ali; Messaho, Driss.
The objective of this paper is to assess food systems performance in Mediterranean countries to deliver safe food (fresh produce), and to demonstrate the capacity to the satisfaction of private customers and public regulators. To that end, an international benchmarking exercise was developed to assess the quality performance gap in food standards across countries and food systems. The study was carried out in three Mediterranean countries: Spain, Morocco and Turkey and involved an audit of the citrus and tomatoes supply chains, and a comparison with existing "best practice" in infrastructure and management practices at both firm and industry level. The aim was to identify the gaps between fresh produce exporters and a best practice company. To that end,...

Carp land: Economics of fish farms and the impact of region-marketing in the Aischgrund (DEU) and Barycz Valley (POL) ArchiMer
Lasner, Tobias; Mytlewski, Adam; Nourry, Myriam; Rakowski, Marcin; Oberle, Martin.
The carp farmers of today face many challenges, with changing consumer habits, drought, losses of fish to avian predators and diseases presenting some of the most widespread threats. Our study has selected two European carp-farming areas as case studies: the Aischgrund in Germany and the Barycz Valley in Poland, where local stakeholders have initiated region-marketing concepts. The carp provides the core identity of these region-marketing. The region-marketing aims to boost touristic attractiveness of the regions and should indirectly support carp farmers in the strained economic situation for carp aquaculture. Notwithstanding, it is unknown, how the region-marketing effects carp farms' economics. Stakeholders were interviewed to explore the establishment...

Food Safety in Agricultural International Trade: The Spanish experience in Mediterranean products AgEcon
Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel; Garca, Marian.
Food international trade between developed and developing countries is increasing as a consequence of the worldwide liberalization movement. Tariffs and technical barriers are decreasing and many exporters in developing countries are ready to supply to developed markets. However there are non-tariff barriers, some of them related to food safety. The goal of this paper is to analyse how some food safety and quality control measures may be overcome by Less Developed Countries following some indications, such as a benchmarking analysis. The identification of “best practice” in operating firms may be useful to others. We describe the evolution of international trade, the situation at destination and origin markets through the international channel. It is...

IFCN Cash Crop: Benchmarking Farms Globally Oilseed Production Costs AgEcon
Plessmann, Frank; Ebmeyer, Christian; Goerg, Konrad.
Vegetable oil production has become one of the fastest expanding cash crop sectors in the last 50 years and it is still increasing rapidly. However the regions of expansion, the sources of plant oil and their importance vary over time. To shed light on this development it is necessary to look at the farm level production systems and their production costs for a variety of countries and oilseeds. In this paper we present the first results of the IFCN Cash Crop Network covering the international comparison of oilseed producing farms. A total of 25 farms with oilseed production have been analysed in compiling this paper. All farms produce at least one of the following oilseeds: soybeans, oilseed rape, sunflower and (two farms) mustard. The farms are located...

Intercomparison of data-driven and learning-based interpolations of along-track Nadir and wide-swath Swot altimetry observations ArchiMer
Beauchamp, Maxime; Fablet, Ronan; Ubelmann, Clément; Ballarotta, Maxime; Chapron, Bertrand.
Over the last years, a very active field of research aims at exploring new data-driven and  learning-based methodologies to propose computationally efficient strategies able to benefit from  the large amount of observational remote sensing and numerical simulations for the reconstruction,  interpolation and prediction of high-resolution derived products of geophysical fields. In this paper,  we investigate how they might help to solve for the oversmoothing of the state-of-the-art optimal  interpolation (OI) techniques in the reconstruction of sea surface height (SSH) spatio-temporal  fields. We focus on two small 10° x 10° GULFSTREAM and 8° x 10° OSMOSIS regions, part  of the North-Atlantic basin: the GULFSTREAM area is mainly driven by energetic...

On-Farm Benchmarking: How to Do It and How to Do It Better AgEcon
Franks, J.R.; Collis, Jimi.
Benchmarking is the practice of establishing the relative performance of a business or enterprise against an appropriate standard, generally industry standards derived from a survey of farms. The Policy Commission into the Future of Farming and Food (2002) highlighted a need to spread and improve benchmarking on farms. The requirements of effective benchmarking are illustrated in a ten step framework. The ten steps illustrate the range of expertise and resources a manager requires before being able to justify allocating resources to benchmarking. A comparison of alternative farm surveys and methodologies used to collect, analyse and report industry standards illustrates the difficulties farmers can have in identifying appropriate, robust and accurate...

Performance/Benchmarking Chains and Net-Works AgEcon
de Vlieger, J.J..
In this paper a study is presented that had as goal to develop a management instrument (benchmarking)for co-innovation projects on basis of a set of performance indicators for chains and net-works of firms. To base the indicators on a sound basis relevant theories were studied, like industrial economics, resource-based theory, marketing theory, net-work theory and also specialised theories related to flexibility, innovation and quality care. Thereafter a framework was developed. The framework consist of a quick scan of performance measurement and comparative benchmarking to get a global idea of the possible improvements. For the aspects that need to be improved a more fine tuned approach is the measurement of performance related tot the different processes...

Queensland Dairy Accounting Scheme 2004 Results and Analysis AgEcon
Murphy, Ray; Busby, Graeme.
This paper provides an overview of the operation of the Queensland Dairy Accounting Scheme (QDAS) and the results and analysis of the 2003-04 data. QDAS is a voluntary scheme providing dairy farmers with an analysis of their dairy business. Key indictors measure performance and the results are then compared against benchmarks and personal targets. Analysis of data has shown that the profit drivers on the most profitable farms in QDAS, are production per cow, herd size, use of homegrown feeds and use of nitrogen fertiliser.

REGIONAL BENCHMARKING PROCESS IN COGNAC PROJECT (COORDINATION OF RDI POLICIES AND THEIR COHERENCE WITH OTHER POLICIES IN THE NEWLY ACCEDED COUNTRIES) AgEcon
Berde, Agnes; Nadaban, Marta Volgyine.
In order to achieve the Lisbon objectives and create a knowledge based society, Europe needs to increase and improve investment in R&D. This requires improving the effectiveness and coherence of research policies at European, national and regional levels. The first cycle of application of the open method of co-ordination (OMC) to the 3% objective provided an overview of the Member States policies in a number of areas, facilitated mutual learning and led to a number of policy recommendations adopted by CREST in October 2004. The current regional benchmarking practice is made within a 6th Framework Programme project called Cognac, which is the acronym for Coordination of R&D&I policies and their coherence with other policies in Newly Acceded...
